THOUGHTS:
The West Coast’s Premier Southern Gospel Quartet, The Lighthouse Boys, are back with a very special EP release. This project entitled The Sessions honors the late Bill Underwood and Steve Johnson, both founding members of this legendary group. Bill Underwood sang baritone for the group from 1974 until he passed away in 2021. Steve Johnson sang both lead and bass for the group over their storied fifty year career. He passed away in July of this year. This special project features their final recordings with the group. Bill Underwood is featured on the tender ballad “He’ll Carry You” which reminds us that God will carry us through each and every trial we face. There is nothing he can’t bring us through. Underwood is joined on this track by Mark Underwood (Tenor), Stephen Underwood (Lead), and Lee Hulbert (Bass). Underwood’s smooth baritone is also featured on the classic “The Lighthouse” and another tender ballad “From Heaven’s Point Of You.” Steve Johnson’s classic bass is featured on “The Lighthouse,” “Greatly Blessed,” and “From Heaven’s Point Of View.” Stephen Underwood takes the lead on the fun “Greatly Blessed.” I’ve loved this song ever since I heard the Gaither Vocal Band sing it. This is a fantastic version as well. The group also shines on a great arrangement of the classic “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” paired with “Sweet, Sweet Spirit.” This medley features Mark Underwood, Bill Underwood, Stephen Underwood, and Lee Hulbert.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
THE LIGHTHOUSE BOYS HAVE DELIVERED YET ANOTHER STELLAR RECORDING. THIS SPECIAL RECORDING HONORS THE TWO OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF THIS LEGENDARY QUARTET WHO HAVE PASSED ON TO GLORY. BILL UNDERWOOD AND STEVE JOHNSON’S FINAL RECORDINGS ARE COLLECTED HERE ON THIS PROJECT. “GREATLY BLESSED” AND “FROM HEAVEN’S POINT OF VIEW” WERE PREVIOUSLY RELEASED ON THE GROUP’S THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION CD. “WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS/SWEET, SWEET SPIRIT” AND “HE’LL CARRY YOU” WERE PREVIOUSLY RELEASED AS A SINGLE, BUT THESE VERSIONS FEATURE BILL UNDERWOOD. THIS PROJECT IS A MUST HAVE FOR NOT ONLY FANS OF THE GROUPS, BUT ALL SOUTHERN GOSPEL FANS.
