THOUGHTS:

Trey Ivey is one of the best young musicians in Southern Gospel music  in my humble opinion! He has an incredible God-given talent that continues to amaze me as well as audiences all over the country at Legacy Five concerts. Ivey joined Legacy Five back in 2011 following the departure of pianist Tim Parton and has been a great fit for the group. This CD of timeless Gospel classics showcases the immense talent of Legacy Five’s fifth member.  This recording has a little bot of everything: the swinging quartet feel of “Oh I Want To See Him,” the grand orchestral feel of “How Great Thou Art/ My Tribute,” and the tender medley of the Cross and “Softly And Tenderly.” There are occasional background vocalists on select songs, but this is an instrumental record.  Ivey’s masterful arrangements and piano playing definitely reminded me of greats such as Roger Bennett and Anthony Burger.

While I usually listen to records with vocals, this project has reminded me that there is nothing like the simple yet beautiful sound of the piano.

Overall, this record is a great collection of classic hymns and Gospel songs played by the masterful young pianist of one of Southern Gospel’s most popular groups, Legacy Five. Trey Ivey continues to prove that he is one of the best in the business. Standout tracks include: “Oh I Want To See Him,” “Cross Medley,” “Goodbye World Goodbye,” “Victory In Jesus,” and “I’ve Got That Old Time Religion In My Heart.”
